Georgia Drivers Education Online and Learners Permit Process

  • You must be at least 15 years of age to apply at the DDS for your Georgia Learners Permit. Our online drivers education course prepares the student for the learners permit test and will give them access to an online driving manual and practice tests as well. They can begin taking drivers education onliine before their 15th birthday, if they'd wish to get their learners permit on the day of their birthday.
     
  • A parent or legal guardian must sign for the applicant.

  • Applicants must know their social security number. The number is required to issue a permit.

  • The parent or legal guardian must own and present proper identification or a standard Proof of Residency document.

The Driving Permit with Joshua's Law Online Drivers Education

  • The Driving permit is valid for 24 months.
     
  • The permit holder is allowed to drive with a licensed adult, at least 21 years old, in the front seat of the car at all times.

    • Effective January 1, 2007, sixteen year olds must be in compliance with Joshua's Law Drivers education requirements.
    • Our online drivers ed course submits our student's certificates directly to the DDS electronically , ensuring they get there fast, where it is matched to the your license record. Simply complete your driving lessons, at your own pace, and in the comfort of your own home. When your finished, simply click the submit button and we will get your final certificate electronically out the same day if submitted before noon or within one business day. Its that simple.
  • The applicant must pass a vision exam.
     
  • The applicant must pass a two part knowledge exam pertaining to Road Rules and Road Signs. Our online drivers education course is a multi sensory course which helps the student to memorize this information quickly.
     
  • The knowledge exam is conducted on a walk in basis only at all Customer Service Centers.

To Obtain Your First Class D License

  • A valid learner's license must be held for one year and one day from its issuance.
     
  • You must be at least 16 years old.

  • Applicant will be required to pass a driving test.
     
  • Appointments for driving tests are highly recommended and may be scheduled up to 90 days in advance. Have your learner's permit number available when calling.

  • A parent or legal guardian must sign an affidavit that the applicant has completed at least 40 hours of on-the-road live experience, including at least 6 hours at night, with a parent or guardian. The 40 hour requirement is in addition to any time completed with an instructor during the required drivers education training.
     
  • A Certificate of Attendance form must be signed and notarized from your school. It is only valid for 30 days. All applicants under the age of 18 not enrolled in school must provide a GED diploma, high school diploma, or an attendance form from your local School Board if you are enrolled in an approved home school program.
     
  • You must have the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP) card. For more information you can call toll free (800) 245-4410.
     

     
  • The vehicle to be used for the road test must be properly insured; the insurance card, and registration must be presented. The license plate (tag) must be valid and the vehicle must also pass a safety inspection.

  • A DDS Certificate of Attendance (DS – 1) form must be signed and notarized by your school. If not attending school, applicants under the age of 18 must provide a GED diploma, high school diploma, or proof of enrollment in college. Students enrolled in an approved home school program must present a Certificate of Attendance form from the local School Board.
